President Announces Pick for New Surgeon General

November 15, 2013—President Obama Nov. 14 announced his intent to nominate Vivek Hallegere Murthy, M.D., M.B.A., as the next U.S. Surgeon General. Dr. Murthy is the co-founder and president of Doctors for America, a national grassroots organization of physicians that advocates for a high quality, affordable health care system for all Americans. He is also an internal medicine hospitalist attending physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical School.

In 2011, Dr. Murthy was appointed to the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health. Created under the Affordable Care Act (ACA, P.L. 111-148 and P.L. 111-152), the group advises the National Prevention Council in developing public, private, and nonprofit partnerships that will leverage opportunities to improve the nation's health. It is also responsible for developing and suggesting policy and program recommendations to the council.

Since 2007, Dr. Murthy has been the co-founder and chairman of the board of TrialNetworks, a technology company that aims to make clinical trials more effective and efficient. Dr. Murthy co-founded Visions in 1995, a nonprofit organization focused on HIV/AIDS education in the United States and India. He served as its president from 1995-2000 and chairman of the board from 2000-2003.

Pending confirmation from the Senate, Dr. Murthy will succeed Regina Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A., who resigned in July [see Washington HighlightsJune 14].
