Deans, Hospital CEOs Urge Congress to Stop Sequester Cuts to NIH

October 25, 2013— Nearly 200 medical school deans and teaching hospital CEOs signed an Oct. 22 letter  calling on Congress to stop additional sequestration cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget. The letter, delivered to all members of Congress, expresses “grave concern” about the impact of sequestration on medical research and the health of America’s patients.

“Enacted and proposed cuts in NIH funding threaten current and emerging basic research opportunities across the country, as well as the clinical studies that are essential to bringing scientific discoveries from the bench to the bedside,” the deans and CEOs note in the letter. “Further, these cuts also will discourage young people from careers in medical research, risking the loss of the next generation of innovators and their ideas.”

AAMC-member medical schools and teaching hospitals conduct more than half of the research sponsored by NIH. Funding cuts due to sequestration reduced the NIH budget by $1.5 billion in FY 2013. Without congressional action, a second round of cuts will take effect in January 2014.

The deans and CEOs point out that these cuts come at a particularly difficult time when reduced clinical revenue and potential cuts in federal funding for teaching hospitals “will severely limit” the ability of their institutions “to invest in their research mission and train the next generation of physicians and scientists.”

“We urge Congress and the Administration to work together on a solution that avoids sequestration and the devastating impact these continued across-the-board cuts to NIH and academic medicine will have on the millions of Americans depending on the lifesaving research conducted at the nation’s medical schools and teaching hospitals,” they conclude.
