PCORI Makes Two New Funding Announcements

September 13, 2013—The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors Sept. 10 approved more than $114 million in funding for 71 new projects to conduct comparative effectiveness research (CER).

The projects that were selected target a variety of chronic conditions, such as heart disease anddementia and mental health disorders. They will investigate ways to improve the design and conduct of research, reduce disparities in clinical outcomes, and improve health care delivery systems. Overall, this research agenda strives to improve capacity on a national level to conduct CER through an improvement in research methods.

PCORI also announced the award of a $9 million contract to the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute to serve as a coordinating center for a new national data network designed to enhance CER The coordinating center will provide technical and logistical support to the proposed new National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network.

According to PCORI, “The initiative’s goal is to improve the nation’s capacity to conduct CER efficiently and learn from the healthcare experiences of millions of Americans by creating a large network of health data representative of patients from across the country.”
