Hospital Groups Urge Congress to Complete CHGME Reauthorization

December 21, 2012—The AAMC joined the Children’s Hospital Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Hospital Association in signing a Dec. 20 joint letter  to Democratic and Republican Senate leaders calling upon them, before the end of the year, to “ensure access to health care for America’s children by…passing into law legislation to reauthorize the Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) program.” The letter was sent shortly after the House of Representatives passed a 5-year reauthorization of the program as part of an amended version of the Senate-passed PREEMIE Reauthorization Act (S. 1440).

The letter explains that “CHGME is a highly effective program, increasing the number of pediatric providers and easing critical shortages in pediatric specialty care.” It adds that “the CHGME program is an investment in the health care of every child in this country, and an investment in the future of the nation.”
