AAMC Expresses Concern About Impact of Continued Research Cuts on Health

December 14, 2012—The AAMC joined nearly 200 patient and voluntary health groups, medical and scientific societies, and medical schools and teaching hospitals in a Dec. 11 letter  to all members of Congress expressing grave concern about the impact of continued cuts, including sequestration, on medical research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and “the subsequent negative consequences for the health of all Americans.”

The letter, organized by the AAMC-led Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research, states, “At a time when we should be investing more in this agency, which spurs job creation and economic growth, the impact of an 8.2 percent cut on NIH-funded research will be immediate and devastating.”

“If we are to address the health challenges of an aging and increasingly diverse population, and remain a vibrant force in the global economy,” the letter concludes, “America needs more investment in medical research, not less. The members of the Ad Hoc Group urge Congress and the Administration to work together on a solution that avoids sequestration and the devastating impact of across-the-board cuts.”
