Infographic Illustrates Role of Medical Schools, Teaching Hospitals in Health Care

November 2, 2012—The AAMC Oct. 26 unveiled a new infographic that shows the unique role the nation’s medical schools and teaching hospitals play in the health care system.  The illustration includes brief facts and statistics that underscore the role of academic medicine in educating and training tomorrow’s doctors, conducting pioneering research to discover new treatments and cures, and improving patient care. The association hopes it will be an important tool for educating congressional members and their staff in the 113th Congress.

AAMC constituents are encouraged share the infographic with their colleagues to highlight information on the missions of AAMC member institutions, such as:

  • The nation’s nearly 400 major teaching hospitals train 80,000 residents in primary care and specialty areas each year;
  • AAMC-member teaching hospitals provide approximately 25 percent of clinical care and nearly 40 percent of charity care; and
  • Medical schools and teaching hospitals drive health innovations in treating cancer, diabetes, chronic disease, and more.

The infographic is featured on the AAMC homepage and can be downloaded from the AAMC newsroom.
