PCORI Board of Governors Meets, Institute Announces Topic Generation Website

September 28, 2012—At its Sept. 24, meeting, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors heard an update on funding applications from the latest round of submissions. Executive Director Joe Selby observed that the PCORI funding announcement that closed July 31 [see Washington Highlights, May 25] produced a well balanced mix of topics and methods, trending toward studies of chronic disease. Next, PCORI will recruit technical, patient, and stakeholder reviewers to evaluate the applications. Funding awards announcements are expected in December 2012.

At the same meeting, PCORI announced the launch of a process to solicit topics for study. The recently launched topic generation Web page requests input from patients, stakeholders, clinicians, and researchers about patient-centered research questions.  Information generated from the solicitation will be used to inform topics for future funding.

The board also heard a presentation on upcoming formation of advisory panels on various topics, designed to meet current and future needs for topic specific advice. Panels would be built with diverse inclusion from patients, researchers, and clinical and topic experts, with priority given to systems experts. The target for getting the first set of panels up and running is early 2013.
