Dr. David Murray Named Director of the NIH Office of Disease Prevention

July 6, 2012—Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., July 2 announced the appointment of David M. Murray, Ph.D., as Associate Director for Disease Prevention and Director of the Office of Disease Prevention (ODP). Dr. Murray will join NIH in September from The Ohio State University, where he is chair and professor of the Division of Epidemiology, College of Public Health.

The Office of Disease Prevention (ODP) is the lead office at the NIH “responsible for assessing, facilitating, and stimulating research on disease prevention and health promotion, and disseminating the results of this research to improve public health.” It is a component of the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI).

Dr. Paul Coates has been serving as Acting Director of ODP since the December 2010. He will remain as Director of the Office of Dietary Supplements within ODP.
