April 24: Rescheduled Senate Subcommittee Hearing on Great Ape Protection Act

The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Subcommittee on Water and Wildlife, has rescheduled its hearing on six pending bills, including the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act of 2011 (S. 810), originally scheduled for March 13. James M. Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., director of the NIH Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives, is expected to testify among two panels of witnesses.

April 25: Senate HELP Committee to Mark Up FDA Safety and Innovation Act
10:00 a.m.; 106 Dirksen Senate Office Building; Washington, D.C.
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will meet to mark up the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Safety and Innovation Act, which would authorize the FDA to collect user fees from manufacturers to expedite the process of approving drugs and medical devices. The committee will also consider amendments dealing with drug supply chain integrity, medical device policy, prescription drug shortages, incentivizing new antibiotic development, and drug approval and patient access.

April 25: Senate Hearing on VA Mental Health Care

The Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs will hold a hearing to discuss veterans’ access to and the quality of mental health care.

April 25: Friends of the VA Medical Care and Health Research Briefing
12:30 p.m.; 334 Cannon House Office Building; Washington, D.C.
The FOVA coalition will host a briefing on the VA Research program, including Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (R-N.Y.); Randy Kardon, M.D., Ph.D., Pomerantz Family chair in ophthalmology and director of the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service, University of Iowa; Paula P. Schnurr, Ph.D., research professor, department of psychiatry, Dartmouth Medical School; and VA Chief Research and Development Officer Joel Kupersmith, M.D.

April 26: Secretary Sebelius to Testify at House Education and Workforce Hearing
10:00 a.m.; 2175 Rayburn House Office Building; Washington, D.C.
The House Committee on Education and the Workforce will hear testimony from Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius regarding the president’s FY 2013 budget proposal. This hearing will also be available via webcast.
