CMS Announces First 27 ACOs

April 13, 2012—The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) April 10 announced the selection of the first 27 accountable care organizations (ACOs) to participate in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), authorized under section 3022 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA, P.L., 111-148 and P.L. 111-152).  CMS also announced that of the 27 ACOs, five are participating in the Advance Payment ACO Model beginning April 1 [see Washington Highlights, May 20, 2011]. The MSSP ACO final rule, released October 2011, offered both April 1 and July 1 start dates for the first year of the program [see Washington Highlights,Oct. 21, 2011].  CMS currently is reviewing more than 150 applications for ACOs seeking to participate beginning July 1, with more than 50 applying for the advanced payment model.

Four AAMC members are participating in the ACOs per the descriptions in the CMS fact sheet: Atlantic Health; Tucson Medical Center; Beth Israel Medical Center; and Hackensack University Medical Center.

The 27 MSSP ACOs will coordinate care for nearly 375,000 beneficiaries in 18 states.  Including the 32 Pioneer Model ACOs that were announced last December [see Washington Highlights, Dec. 22, 2011], and six Physician Group Practice Transition Demonstration organizations that started in January 2011, there are now 65 sites participating in a Medicare shared savings initiative. In all, as of April 1, more than 1.1 million beneficiaries are receiving care from providers participating in Medicare shared savings initiatives.
