AAMC Releases Report on COI Rule Implementation

March 30, 2012—The AAMC March 26 released a report on implementing the final rule on financial conflicts of interest (COI) in federally funded research, which was published by Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in the Federal Register on Aug. 25, 2011 [see Washington Highlights, Sept. 2, 2011].

The report, “Implementing the Final Rule on Financial Conflicts of Interest in Public Health Service Funded Research:  Preliminary Institutional Considerations and Approaches to Selected Provisions,”  is the result of a series of regional meetings to discuss implementation strategies convened a few months after the rule was issued.  All institutions that receive Public Health Service (PHS) funding must implement the requirements of the new rule by Aug. 24, 2012.

The goal of the report is to provide institutions subject to the rule with insight into how their peer institutions were thinking about the issues in the first months after the announcement of the new rule. The report also highlights ideas discussed during the meetings that gained the most traction in terms of feasibility among AAMC-member institutions.
