ED Begins Rulemaking Sessions, AAMC Nominee Selected to Participate

January 20, 2012—The Department of Education (ED) Jan. 9-12 held the first of three week-long sessions for negotiated rulemaking on issues relating to student loan programs under Title IV of the Higher Education Act (HEA) as announced in the Oct. 28, 2011, Federal Register.  Elaine Papas-Varas, director of student financial aid, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), serves on the negotiating committee’s Student Loans Team as a joint AAMC, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), and American Dental Education Association nominee.

The committee approved 25 issue papers that will be discussed over the negotiating sessions. Of particular importance to medical schools, the committee will address:

The negotiating committee is scheduled to meet Feb. 13-17, and is expected to proceed with drafting regulatory text based on the 25 issue papers.  The committee’s final meeting is scheduled for March 26-30. Additional information is available on the department’s Negotiated Rulemaking website.
