House Votes to Block Debt Limit Increase

January 20, 2012—As expected, the House of Representative Jan. 18 voted 239-176 to reject President Obama’s request to increase the statutory limit on the nation’s debt by $1.2 trillion.  The vote was on a joint resolution (H.J.Res 98) to disapprove the third installment of increased borrowing authority authorized under the Budget Control Act of 2011 (P.L. 112-25) enacted last August [see Washington Highlights, Aug. 5, 2011].  The Budget Control Act immediately raised the debt limit by $400 billion, and another $500 billion was added in September.

The House vote largely is symbolic because Democrats in the Senate are expected to defeat the resolution the week of Jan. 23.  Even if the resolution makes it through the Senate, President Obama would veto it.  Assuming the resolution is not enacted, the debt ceiling will increase Jan. 27.
