Geographic Variation in Medicare Spending and Utilization

There has been increased interested in looking at how health care utilization and payments vary across geographic areas, particularly for the Medicare population.    The Dartmouth Atlas of Healthcare, for example, compiles data around geographic variation in Medicare spending and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) has examined utilization differences.  The AAMC supports study of the variations issue by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and others, given the variety of factors – not included in the Dartmouth Atlas – that affect geographic variations in health spending.
