The Senate Appropriations Committee on July 25 marked up and advanced the FY25 Commerce, Justice, Science, (CJS) and Related Agencies Act (PDF) by a bipartisan vote of 26-3. The bill would provide $9.55 billion for the National Science Foundation (NSF) for fiscal year (FY) 2025, a $490 million (5.4%) increase above the FY 2024 enacted level [refer to Washington Highlights, June 28].
Within the total, the bill would provide $7.53 million for research and related activities, an increase of approximately $398 million (5.29%) from FY 2024. By comparison, the FY 2025 House CJS bill approved by the full appropriations committee proposed $9.3 billion for the NSF and $7.5 billion for research and related activities [refer to Washington Highlights, July 12].
Detailed in Section 507 of the Senate bill is a new policy that would require the NSF to submit a quarterly report to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees outlining account-level appropriations balances.
This bill has not yet been scheduled for a Senate floor vote.
