The Senate on June 18 confirmed the nomination of Sethuraman Panchanathan, PhD, to be the next director of the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The AAMC joined a June 15 Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) letter urging the Senate to act swiftly to vote on the nomination of Dr. Panchanathan following his unanimous approval by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee in a June 3 executive session.

The nearly 130 CNSF member organizations highlighted Panchanathan’s strong credentials, including serving as a member of the National Science Board (NSF’s advisory board) since 2014 and in research leadership positions at Arizona State University. “In this time of national crisis, it is imperative that NSF has strong, permanent leadership to help respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, develop solutions and understanding to strengthen our resilience, and ensure our national science and technology competitiveness,” the letter emphasized.
