AAMC staff participated in a Project Medical Education (PME) event hosted by Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) on Oct. 29, gaining an immersive look at how academic medicine trains the health workforce, advances research, and delivers care in New York City and across the state.

Participants, which included community members and local, state, and federal policymakers, rotated through interactive sessions at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, the Mailman School of Public Health, the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, the College of Dental Medicine, and the School of Nursing. The program highlighted how federal, state, and local investments enable education, research, and patient care across CUIMC. Throughout the program, presenters highlighted community collaborations and efforts that expand access to care and ensure training and research align with local needs.

While many important aspects of CUIMC’s academic medicine footprint were shared, of note, the institution is the largest recipient of National Institutes of Health funding in New York state and is one of the largest faculty medical practices in the northeast.
