New 2018 AMCAS Data Elements

Several new questions were added to the AMCAS application to help medical schools review applicant information in context as a part of a holistic admissions process. They were also added to support compliance with institutional requirements. These changes include:

  • New questions on Date of Separation for Veterans and GI Bill eligibility for all applicants
  • New question on total hours of research experience for MD/PhD applicants
  • New questions on gender identity and preferred pronoun
  • New First Generation College Student Indicator
  • An adjustment to the SES Disadvantaged Indicator

On Wednesday, April 12, 2017, the Group on Student Affairs- Committee on Admissions (COA) and Committee on Student Diversity Affairs (COSDA) hosted the webinar Creating a Welcoming Environment for Gender Diversity in Medical School Admissions to engage schools in thoughtful conversation regarding effective practices for using the new gender identity data element in their admissions process. During this 75-minute webinar, representatives from AAMC member institutions discussed steps they have taken to create safe, welcoming environments for students with diverse gender identities and expressions. Panelists shared promising practices that admissions officers, and the broader institution, can implement in order to improve the interview process for students with gender diversity and to create an inclusive learning environment for all.
