    Ever passionate about student and faculty development, Paul A. Hemmer, MD, MPH, MACP, has dedicated his career to improving medical education.

    As vice-chair for educational programs at USUHS since 2008, Dr. Hemmer oversees all preclerkship educational programs and intradepartmental courses, all medicine clerkship sites in the continental United States and Hawaii, M4 electives throughout the United States, and key faculty development programs and initiatives. In all these endeavors, Dr. Hemmer is well-known for his commitment to helping students and faculty excel and has provided personal feedback on the performance of more than 12,000 medical students and several hundred clerkship faculty. Dr. Hemmer also helped develop the Introduction to Clinical Medicine and the Introduction to Clinical Reasoning courses, which he continues to teach.

    Dr. Hemmer’s associated educational scholarship in evaluation, curriculum, and faculty development and educational research has also earned him national and international praise. He has received numerous honors, including Academic Grand Master of the U.S. Air Force, the Patil Award for Assessment by the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), the Ruth-Marie E. Fincher, MD, Service Award from the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Alumni Association, the Laureate Award from the Air Force Chapter of the American College of Physicians, and the Carol Johns Medal, the highest honor faculty can bestow at USUHS. Dr. Hemmer is an active member of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine, the AAMC Group on Educational Affairs (GEA), and the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM), serving as president of CDIM in 2006.

    Dr. Hemmer received his BS from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and his MD from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Gundersen Medical Foundation/Lutheran Hospital in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. Dr. Hemmer joined the faculty at USUHS in 1992, where he later completed a master’s in public health. In 2012, Dr. Hemmer retired as a colonel from the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps after more than 20 years of service and received the Defense Superior Service Medal.
