The
Complexities of Physician Supply and Demand: Projections Through
2025
This Center for Workforce Studies report projects future supply
and demand for physicians and concludes that a national shortage
is likely. While U.S. medical schools are increasing their
enrollment as recommended by the AAMC, the report concludes
that while these increases are necessary, they will not be
sufficient to meet future needs.
2007 State
Physician Workforce Data Book(PDF)
This updated report examines the active physician supply
in each state, as well as current medical school enrollment
and physicians in graduate medical education programs.
The report includes a set of tables with the actual
numbers that are presented visually in the figures.
Physician Behavior and Practice Patterns Related to Smoking Cessation
A nationwide survey of approximately 10,000 physicians identified physician knowledge and practice patterns related to helping patients quit smoking and identified strategies for making effective use of physicians in reducing smoking. The survey was conducted by the AAMC Center for Workforce Studies in collaboration with the Albany Center for Health Workforce Studies
and with a major grant from the American Legacy Foundation.
Recruitment of New Physician Investigators in Clinical Research: Findings From a Survey of Clinical Department Chairs at U.S. Medical Schools
Academics have warned of a looming national shortage of physician clinical investigators, but evidence has been largely anecdotal. The AAMC surveyed chairs of selected clinical departments at U.S. medical schools to determine the prevalence of open positions for such individuals, and success or failure in filling these positions during the years 2002-2004.
Recent Studies
and Reports on Physician Shortages in the U.S. (PDF)
Over the past several years, a growing number of studies examining the U.S. physician workforce have concluded that we are facing current or future shortages. This report provides a summary of these studies, highlighting the major conclusions of the findings.

State Physician Workforce Studies
Many states are concerned about possible local physician shortages and are experiencing pressure to increase medical capacity.
At the same time, many medical schools are trying to determine whether
they should expand capacity.
To assist states and medical schools interested in assessing
the state physician supply and demand, the Center prepared a paper
on approaches to conducting state level physician workforce studies.
The Center also provides guidance on state-specific studies.
Specialty-Specific Studies
Many specialty associations also are concerned with workforce issues
and possible shortages. The Center provides technical assistance
and collaborates on studies and surveys.
Assessing the Impact of Aging on the Supply
and Use of Physicians by Specialty
The Center is exploring a study of the impact of aging in the U.S.
on the supply and utilization of physicians in 20 to 25 specialties.
For each specialty, the report would present current utilization
rates by age and the impact of the aging of the nation on likely
future use. On the supply side, it would include the age profile
of each specialty and any known information about retirement rates.
The section for each specialty would include an assessment of the
likely impact of aging on the balance of physician supply and demand. |
