Each year, the Secretary of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) holds a competition for students enrolled in U.S. health-professions schools to submit papers describing an innovative project. The competition, the Secretary's Award for Innovations in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, is referred to as the Secretary's Award.

Submitted projects must support one or more of the Healthy People 2010 and Steps to a HealthierUS goals, as well as one or more focus areas. Six projects are selected to receive government funding.

The annual competition is sponsored by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) — a part of HHS — in collaboration with the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP); the AAMC is a member of FASHP. Entries may be single-discipline or interprofessional (more than one discipline). All medical single-discipline entries are sent to the AAMC Division of Diversity Policy and Programs.

Information about the Secretary's Award and instructions for submitting papers are on the HRSA Web site.
