Jones, R. F. & Adams, L. N. (1983). The Relationship between MCAT
Science Scores and Undergraduate Science GPA. Journal of Medical
Education, 58, 908-1011.
PURPOSE: This study looked at the relationship between
the MCAT scores and undergraduate GPA of medical school applicants
and the role that selectivity in admissions of undergraduate college
plays in this relationship.
METHOD: The data were based on all applicants to the '81-
'82 entering class (n=32,271). The applicants were divided into
four groups according to the selectivity of their undergraduate
college (low, medium, high, and very high selectivity).
RESULTS: The authors reported a positive and linear relationship
between the MCAT science average and the science GPA. Also, systematic
differences were found in the MCAT performance of applicants with
identical GPAs but from colleges with different selectivity.
CONCLUSION: The findings supported the use of MCAT scores
for assisting in the evaluation of academic achievement of applicants.
paper reported two studies that examined the relationship between
taking a commercial coaching course and performance on the MCAT.
