How does ERAS Fellowships Work?

What is ERAS Fellowships?

ERAS Fellowships is a service that transmits fellowship applications, letters of recommendation (LoRs), Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPEs), medical school transcripts, USMLE/COMLEX transcripts, and other supporting credentials from you and the ERAS Fellowships Documents Office (EFDO) to program directors via the Internet. ERAS is made up of MyERAS (the Web site where you create your fellowship application), the ERAS Fellowships Documents Office (EFDO), the Program Director's Workstation (PDWS), and the ERAS PostOffice.

Components of ERAS Fellowships

ERAS is comprised of four main components:

  • MyERAS Web site. This is where you complete your fellowship application and personal goal(s) statement, select programs to apply to, and assign documents to be received by those programs.
    Note:
You cannot access MyERAS until you have received an electronic token from the EFDO.

  • Dean's Office Workstation (DWS). This is ERAS software used by staff at the EFDO. From this software, they create the electronic token that fellowship applicants use to access MyERAS. They also use this system to scan and attach supporting documents to your application, such as photograph, medical school transcript, MSPE, and LoRs. Then they transmit these materials to the ERAS PostOffice.

  • Program Director's Workstation (PDWS). This is ERAS software used by fellowship program staff to receive, sort, review, evaluate, and rank applications.

  • ERAS PostOffice. This is a central bank of computers that transfer the application materials from fellowship applicants and the EFDO to fellowship programs. You can monitor the activity of your files on the ERAS PostOffice via the Applicant Data Tracking System (ADTS).

How does ERAS Fellowships work?

  • Contact the EFDO to receive an electronic token to access the ERAS system. The EFDO is your designated dean's office whether you are a U.S. medical school graduate or an international medical school graduate. EFDO is the central processing office for fellowship application materials submitted via ERAS.

  • Complete the ERAS application or Common Application form (CAF), select programs and assign supporting documents to participating fellowship programs.

  • EFDO receives notification of your completed application, and starts transmitting supporting documents: transcripts, LoRs, photographs and MSPEs. Note: All documents in support of your fellowship application should be original versions and not copies; and are to be sent directly to the EFDO for processing. See mailing address below.

  • Examining boards receive and process requests for score reports.

  • Programs contact the ERAS PostOffice on a daily basis to download application materials.
