Considering a Career in Medical Research
The field of medical research continues to expand dramatically with each
new discovery and technical innovation. This wide diversity of research
efforts makes it impossible to compile a comprehensive list of research projects
or positions available to medical scientists with advanced degrees.
One source of information is the Graduate Medical Education Directory
(the "Green Book"), published by the American Medical
Association (AMA). This publication lists all U.S. residency programs
approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
in each recognized medical specialty. The Green Book is available
at most medical schools and undergraduate college libraries or may be
obtained directly from the AMA.
The AMA's Journal of the American Medical
Association and Academic Medicine,
published by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), provide the
most current information on research developments, opportunities, and
facilities. These periodicals are available at most libraries; individual
subscriptions may be obtained by contacting:

A number of medical schools offer combined M.D./Ph.D.
degree programs, which provide students the opportunity to earn
both the M.D. and the Ph.D in areas pertinent to medicine.
The
Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is a combined M.D.-Ph.D.
program supported by the federal government's National Institute of
General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). The MSTP provides training in
both basic and clinical sciences to highly motivated students with outstanding
research and academic potential. If accepted, students are awarded tuition
plus an annual stipend. Thirty-nine medical schools participate
in the MSTP. For more information, contact:

One of the most helpful brochures, "300 Ways to Put
Your Talent to Work in the Health Field," provides addresses
for various U.S. health organizations involved in medical research. Questions
about a particular branch of research should be directed to the
appropriate health organization. The brochure can be obtained by contacting:
