FAP Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
FAP Basics
Financial Questions
My parents receive only Social Security benefits
and did not file taxes this year. How do I submit documentation
of this?
Social Security and Disability benefits should be included as Non-Taxable
Income on the Parent/Guardian Financial Information screen on your
Fee Assistance Program application. In this instance, FAP requires
a copy of the social security benefits statement reflecting the
total amount of income received for the year.
My parents and/or I received only unemployment compensation
last year. How should I reflect this on the Fee Assistance Program
application?
Since unemployment compensation is taxable, this should be reflected
on the federal tax form (1040) as the Adjusted Gross Income. Therefore,
unemployment compensation should be included as the Adjusted Gross
Income on the Applicant and/or Parent/Guardian Financial Information
screen on your Fee Assistance Program application.
Do I need to fill out multiple FAP applications
if I want to take more than one MCAT and/or submit an AMCAS application?
No. Once a FAP application is approved, this Fee Assistance approval
may be applied to any subsequently submitted MCAT registration or
AMCAS application during that calendar year. For the MCAT, a FAP
approval may be used to reduce the MCAT registration fee (for test
year 2009, from $225 to $85). For AMCAS, a FAP approval will enable
an applicant to apply to up to 13 medical schools with the application
fee waived. Appropriate fees must be paid to process an application
to medical schools beyond this initial set of 13.
My parents live in another state. How
can I have them fill out this form?
Applicants may complete the Parent/Guardian Biographic and Financial
screens of the FAP application. However, the parent(s)/guardian(s)
whose information is provided on the FAP application is required
to sign the Supporting Documentation Cover Letter, and by signing,
certify that the information completed on their behalf is complete
and correct to the best of their knowledge and belief. As such,
the AAMC recommends that applicants to the Fee Assistant Program
provide the parent(s)/ guardian(s) whose information is provided
on the FAP application with a copy of the applicant's FAP Summary
Report.
How many times can I receive FAP?
An examinee/applicant may receive fee assistance for MCAT and/or
AMCAS through the Fee Assistance Program (FAP) for a maximum of
five (5) calendar years during his or her lifetime, so that other
examinees may also benefit from this program.
Can I submit my AMCAS application
or my MCAT registration prior to receiving Fee Assistance Program
approval?
FAP does not offer fee assistance retroactively: To receive the
benefits of FAP approval, you must wait to receive a decision on
your FAP application before submitting your AMCAS application or
registering for the MCAT. If you submit your AMCAS application prior
to receiving FAP approval, FAP benefits will not be applied to your
AMCAS processing fees, including medical schools to which you apply
after receiving FAP approval.
I received FAP approval
after submitting my AMCAS application or registering for the MCAT.
Am I eligible for a refund?
No. FAP does not offer fee assistance retroactively, and you will
not receive a refund for AMCAS or MCAT registration fees paid prior
to FAP approval.
When should I submit my FAP application?
The AAMC will begin accepting Fee Assistance Program applications
for the 2009 calendar year in early January 2009. Applications will
be accepted until December 15, 2009. Please be cautious of all documentation
receipt dates before submitting your application. Please consult
the calendar on the FAP homepage for guidance
in submitting your FAP application in a timely manner.
