The Letter Writer Application is designed to assist authors
upload letters of evaluation/recommendation to an AMCAS applicant's
application.
Definitions
AAMC - Association of American Medical Colleges
AAMC ID - 8 digit identification number assigned to each
user of AAMC products and services.
AMCAS - American Medical College Application Service
Letter ID - unique 7 digit number assigned to each letter
entry on the AMCAS application.
Letter Request Form - PDF generated for letter writer author
that includes the mailing address, applicant's AAMC ID, and the
Letter ID associated with that letter entry.
Using the Letter Writer Application
Before uploading letters of evaluation/recommendation letter writers
must be registered for an AAMC account. If you already have access
to the Advisor Information System (AIS) you can use your existing
log in or you can create a new log in by first going to the Log
In to the Letter Writer Page on the right hand side of this page
and then select the register option once on the page to register
for a new account.
Note - Medical schools may require your letters to be on official
letterhead and include the author's signature.
How to Upload Letters
- Obtain student's AAMC and Letter ID's:
- The applicant can provide you with their AAMC ID and their
letter ID(s).
- The letter ID can also be found on the Letter Request Form.
- Enter AAMC and Letter ID into the appropriate fields at the
top of the page.
Click Search
- Verify applicant's information.
- Upload letter of evaluation by clicking Browse and selecting
the correct file.
(Note: The letter must be a PDF file smaller than 5MB).
- After selecting the correct file click "upload". (Note: Selecting
"Add Without Uploading" will add the applicant to your roster
if you do not wish to include the letter at this time).
- Please verify that this letter is correct. Once you upload
a letter no deletions or modifications can be made. Future letters
you upload with this Letter ID will be pre-pended to letters previously
uploaded.
- Once you have verified that this is the correct letter, click
"Upload this Letter" to add it to the applicant's file.
- After uploading this letter it will immediately appear in the
applicant's AMCAS application and be sent to any medical schools
assigned by the applicant when the application is processed.
How to upload the initial letter for an applicant already on the
roster
- Click "Upload" for the applicant and corresponding Letter ID
to which you would like to add a letter.
- Verify applicant's information.
- Upload letter of evaluation by clicking Browse and selecting
the correct file. (Note: The letter must be a PDF file smaller
than 5MB).
- After selecting the correct file click "upload". (Note: Selecting
"Add Without Uploading" will add the applicant to your roster
if you do not wish to include the letter at this time).
- Please verify that this letter is correct. Once you upload

FAQs
How do I view an applicant's contact information?
The contact information for a specific applicant can be found by
clicking their name on the roster.
What if you mistakenly add the wrong letter to an applicant's
file?
Once a letter has been uploaded it cannot be removed. You can add
the correct letter to the applicant's file along with a note explaining
that the first letter was incorrect. AMCAS will forward all uploaded
documents to the medical schools.
How to view an existing letter?
Click the "View Letter" button to the right of the applicant's AAMC
ID and Letter ID to view all previously uploaded letters.
How to create a PDF?
To read PDFs online, you need PDF-reader software such
as Adobe Reader. However, to create PDFs, you need PDF-creation
software such as Adobe Acrobat, available at www.adobe.com
