Medical School Tuition and Young Physician Indebtedness (An Update to the 2004 Report) (2007)

This free report revisits the 2004 analysis of U.S. medical school graduates' indebtedness and young physician's ability to repay their debt. The latest data show that problems identified in the first report continue today.

Recent data indicate that tuition and fees have increased dramatically and that the percentage of students in debt at graduation has increased to 85 percent for private medical school graduates and 86 percent for public medical school graduates.

Medical Educational Costs and Student Debt (2005)
This report provides current and historic data on medical school tuition, medical student educational indebtedness, and physician income, and makes projections on the affordability of a medical education. It also contains recommendations about greater accountability, transparency, and predictability in the tuition and fee-setting process; the ongoing education of medical students about the financial aspects of their medical educations; enhanced financial aid, and more.

Medical School Tuition and Young Physician Indebtedness (2004)
This report was requested by the AAMC's Executive Council in response to concerns in the medical education community about rapidly rising tuition levels and high and increasing indebtedness of medical graduates. The report provides a two-decade perspective on rising tuition and student debt and examines availability of loans, the value of a medical education as an investment in human capital, and the ability of young physicians to service the substantial debts.
