Report of the AAMC Task Force on Industry Funding of Medical Education (PDF, 43 pages)
The Task Force on Industry Funding of Medical Education has issued its final report for consideration in June by the AAMC Executive Council. The task force included institutional leaders; faculty; residents; students from the AAMC governance; CEOs from the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries; ethicists; and public representatives. New Medical Schools Advance Through Accreditation Pipeline
The AAMC recently added three new medical schools to its membership roster, bringing the total number of accredited U.S. medical schools to 129. Six additional schools are seeking accreditation, and several more are under informal discussion. As the sole source for accreditation of U.S. educational programs leading to the M.D. degree, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) is at the center of this medical school expansion. The LCME is reaching out to officials at new medical schools and to the public to clarify the accreditation process. (April 22, 2008)

U.S. Medical School Seniors Enjoy Most Successful "Match Day" in 30 Years
Across the nation today, more than 15,000 U.S. medical school seniors will be joined by classmates, friends, and family at "Match Day" ceremonies to learn where they will spend their years of residency training following graduation. There is plenty of reason to celebrate. According to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), which conducts the Match, more than 94 percent of seniors who applied for residencies this year were paired with a program of their choice—the highest percentage in more than three decades. Budget Battles Could Last Into 2009
Protracted deliberations may be in store for several federal measures that are important to academic medicine. Congress could pass a series of continuing resolutions that keep all programs funded at fiscal year 2008 levels until after the new president takes office. (March 11, 2008)

Hospitals File Lawsuit Against Federal Government to Stop Medicaid Cuts
A coalition of hospital associations has asked a federal court to prevent the Bush administration from implementing a proposed Medicaid regulation that would cut $5 billion in funding to safety net hospitals. (March 11, 2008)
