Director: John T. Farrar, MD, PhD
Degrees Offered
Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) degree program, Joint MD/MSCE degree program
Eligibility
Individuals admitted into either program must have an advanced degree in medicine, nursing, or another health-related field, from an accredited college or university. They also must have advanced clinical training in any specialty or subspecialty of medicine, or its equivalent in another health-related discipline.
Duration
2-3 years
Thesis Requirement
A student is expected to design a research project, write a formal research protocol, perform the study described in it, and prepare a comprehensive scholarly scientific paper reporting the results. Students present their thesis protocols at a special session of the CCEB Research Seminar.
Goals
This program is designed to:
- Promote clinical epidemiology research, both in the community and health care settings
- Serve as an interdisciplinary resource for clinical research throughout the Medical Center
- Educate the next generation of national and international leaders in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics
- Teach clinical epidemiology and critical appraisal of the medical literature to medical students, housestaff, and faculty at the University of Pennsylvania
- Promote a population and community perspective in the Medical Center
- Serve as a leader in disseminating research results and in interpreting research to policy-makers and the public
- Serve as a regional, national, and international resource for communities, universities, governments, and other organizations seeking guidance about issues of population medicine, public health, and the epidemiology of disease

Director: Daniel Heitjan, PhD
Degrees Offered
MS and PhD in Biostatistics
Eligibility
Information available at:
http://www.cceb.upenn.edu/education/bio-degree/admissions.php
Duration
MS: 2 years
PhD: 4-5 years
Thesis Requirement
MS: All MS students are required to participate in the Biostatistics Consulting Laboratory. In addition, each MS student must complete a Master's thesis, which typically involves conducting and reporting a comprehensive data analysis. The consulting laboratory will provide the basis for the MS thesis for most students. The consulting laboratory may be taken in either the fall or spring semester.
PhD: All PhD students must participate in the Biostatistics Consulting Workshop, typically during their first or second year. Each student will complete a comprehensive analysis of a dataset and report the results. The consulting workshop provides the basis of thesis projects for most students.
Goals
MS: The goal of the two-year MS degree program is to train students in the theory and applications of statistical methods, especially as applied to problems in the biomedical sciences.
PhD: The four- to five-year PhD program is aimed at training independent researchers in biostatistics applications and methodology.
