Discussion with Panel - Dr. Shapiro
Following presentations and Q & A, the panel and guest speakers will
discuss options for long-term adjustment to incremental growth or
flat funding of NIH research, and implications for science. Among
possible items for consideration:
- Restructuring the workforce (fewer trainees, creation of career
technician or other mid-level positions for support of university
research).
- Formation of multi-institutional consortia to negotiate better terms
for purchasing of materials, services, etc. from private suppliers.
- Increased use of core facilities and shared instrumentation, including
at regional centers supporting multiple institutions.
-
Models of how other sciences, such as in the physical sciences,
have responded to protracted periods of level funding.
12:15 p.m. Working Lunch
1:00 p.m. Conclusion and Recommendations for AAMC
- Dr. Shapiro and Dr. Korn
The Panel is asked to recommend further steps or possible projects
NIH should undertake to address the issues identified, or alternatives
for response by the research community.
