This document is made available for reference purposes only. Questions can be directed to Tony Mazzaschi, AAMC, 202-828-0059 or <tmazzaschi@aamc.org>.Frequently Asked QuestionsPlease submit additional questions to cas@aamc.org. Q: Which groups are eligible for funding? A: Groups eligible for funding under this program are non-profit academic societies that are active in the United States in the fields of medicine, biomedical, or the behavioral sciences, and whose primary missions include advancing medical education and/or biomedical or behavioral research. Q: Can individuals apply? A: Individual society members may submit applications, but society sponsorship must be exhibited at the time of application. Award funds will be distributed to the appropriate academic society. Q: Will the program fund proposals related to bioethics and bioethical research? A: This program is focused on establishing and sustaining long-term commitments on the part of societies to RCR involving multiple generations of researchers, and the development of initiatives that are integrated and maintained as enduring elements of an academic society's infrastructure, and, most importantly, into the culture of a discipline. Proposals focused on bioethics and bioethical research will not be funded under this program. Q. Under what circumstances can award funds be used to pay for food events? A. Proposals that include a major meal function as a central part of the proposed activity will not be funded. For example, a meeting session built around a luncheon event, whether it is a plated meal or box lunch, will not be funded. However, proposals will be considered, for example, that include a full-day task force or consensus-development meeting with a working luncheon included as part of the overall event costs. These costs must be reasonable within the scope of the project, tangential to the function itself, and not intended to pay for meals and refreshments related to larger events. Q. Under what circumstances can award funds be used to pay honoraria? A. The funding of honoraria for a society member to participate in a proposed event or project should not be included in an application's budget, as ORI has determined it is not an appropriate expense under this program. Society members are expected to contribute their effort to worthwhile society activities. Limited honoraria for non-applicant society members to participate in a project will be considered, but only if it is very limited and if, collectively, honoraria does not constitute a significant budget item. |
