Program Resources

Careers in Medicine is an adaptable program that you can use to meet your students' career development needs. Resources are available to assist you in planning a CiM program and in advising your students.

CiM Web Site

The CiM Web site contains the complete, four-phase program including a comprehensive self-assessment section, a confidential personal profile to maintain assessment results, specialty pages containing extensive career information about most of the major specialties and subspecialties, decision-making tools that provide a logical framework for students to think about their options, and guidelines for preparing the residency application.

Most U.S. Allopathic students can register using their AAMC Login. This is the same user name and password used to access MCAT, AMCAS, and other AAMC sites. First year students who wish to register prior to mid-October, may not yet be loaded into the Student Records System and may need to get an access code from their CiM Liaison in order to register. Registration and Access Code Instructions (PDF) for Allopathic schools are available to assist you in providing your students, faculty, and staff access to the site.

All other users, including Canadian and Osteopathic students must register using an individual, one-time use access code (provided by your liaison) and create a unique user ID and password. Access Code Instructions (PDF) for Osteopathic and Canadian schools area available to assist you in providing your students, faculty, and staff access to the site.

Student Guide

Student Guides are available each year free of charge to your incoming class. The Publications Order form (Word) is typically available in early summer with guides printed and shipped beginning in July of each year. This 50-page publication is designed to introduce students to the career planning process in general and the Careers in Medicine program specifically. It is a handy guide to the tasks, tools, and resources available to assist students with specialty and residency choice. It also contains detailed timeline information and a suggested reading list. A guide should be provided to each new student. You can also download the Student Guide (PDF).

Advisor Manual

We have decided, in consultation with our advisory committee and based on liaison feedback, to stop printing our traditional Advisor Manual. Instead we will be moving the content online. The current Advisor Manual (PDF) provides extensive program implementation guidance, workshops, exercises, and information to use as you advise students throughout the career development process. This change to a web-based format will allow us to keep the information more up-to-date and provide you with a more usable and succinct resource.

We will be developing a short, printed publication (a sort of "Advisor-Lite") that will supplement the advisor site, for use in faculty development, that will cover the basics of the program and advising skills, but it will not be the in-depth Advisor Manual of the past. That content, after being reviewed and updated will be moved online. We are beginning the writing and development process for these new resources and we hope to have them available in late 2009. We will continue to update you on our progress. Thanks in advance for your patience as we work to improve the CiM advising resources.

Choices Newsletter

Choices is the newsletter of the Careers in Medicine program. Published in PDF format four times a year, Choices provides pertinent information about specialty choice, getting into residency, and other important guidance related to medical student career planning. The newsletter is sent via email to liaison and liaison support contacts in the medical schools, with the intent that they will forward it to students. It is also available on the CiM Web site. We hope Choices will be a useful tool for you in providing information and resources to your students. If you have any suggestions or article ideas, please contact us at careersinmedicine@aamc.org.

Workshop Materials

There are seven workshop outlines in the Advisor Manual (PDF) that liaisons and advisors can use to build presentations on CiM concepts for their students. Many of these workshops contain handout materials that can be reproduced and provided to students. These workshop handouts are available in PDF format for your use. As we continue to create new materials and strengthen the workshop component of CiM, we will be creating workshop PowerPoint presentations for your use that will be available for download. Please contact us if there are specific workshop topics or resources you would find helpful.

Listserve

An e-mail listserve enables advisors and liaisons to stay current on news related to the program. It is used primarily by staff to provide updates, but can also be a useful tool to pose questions and share information with your colleagues about career planning issues. To subscribe to the listserve, contact Jeanette Calli, jcalli@aamc.org, Program Manager.

Training

Regional Training Workshops can assist you in learning about the Careers in Medicine program and how to implement it in your school. It is offered 3-4 times a year at locations around the country. We also offer Professional Development Conferences every other year on career planning and development in medical schools.

CiM Program Staff

Program staff provide resources and training, update materials and continually assess and improve the program. They are available to answer any questions you may have about providing career planning services to your students.
