Upcoming CiM Workshop
Join us for the next CiM Workshop. Our fall
session will be held September 29-30, 2009, in Washington, D.C., at the
AAMC headquarters.
The sessions are interactive and focus on counseling skills, advising
students on career development and decision-making, using the CiM
Web site, and implementing the program. In addition to learning some
valuable skills that can be used in career planning with students, participants
are also provided with case study experiences and opportunities to exchange
ideas with their fellow attendees. Seats are limited so register early.
Meeting details and registration information are now available on the
AAMC
Meetings site.
CiM PDC a Great Success!
10 Years of Careers in Medicine: Fostering Innovation for the Future
June 15-16, 2009
Hilton Savannah DeSoto - Savannah, Ga.
Thanks for helping Careers in Medicine celebrate our 10th anniversary
during our recent professional development conference. The conference
was a great success! Over 80 of our colleagues from across the country
came together to hear the latest on CiM implementation activities, to
expand their understanding and depth of knowledge of career planning;
to share research, ideas, and best practices; get people energized about
Careers in Medicine; and identify barriers to implementing Careers in
Medicine and explore ways of overcoming them. We've collected presentations
and handout information for all of the sessions, which can be found on
the AAMC
Meetings site (Login required).
New Registration and Reporting Features Now Available on the CiM Web
site
We are pleased to announce two new improvements to the Careers in Medicine
Web site. The first improvement is to the registration procedures for
U.S. allopathic students. U.S. allopathic students will now be able to
register on the site using just their AAMC user name and password. This
is the same login used for access to the MCAT, AMCAS, and other AAMC sites.
If they no longer remember their information, there are tools they can
use to look-up and/or reset their login. They will no longer need an access
code if they register in this manner. There are some limitations, based
on the loading of student data into the AAMC's Student Records System
which are outlined in the Registration
and Access Code Instructions. (PDF)
The second improvement is a new individual usage report available to
Liaison, Liaison Support and selected Faculty/staff users. The report
allows you to search for and view the CiM site usage of individual students
at your institution. It is intended to help you track a student's progress
through the CiM system and assist you in advising students on the assessments
and tools that may be most useful for them to complete. The report allows
you to search by different criteria including name, email, class year,
login dates, and assessment type to look up a student. You can then view
their usage of the site including the number of times they have logged
in and which assessments they have completed. The report does not provide
assessment results - those are confidential and are only accessible by
the student.
You can also save a specific group of users to your user lists. For example,
if you have a group of advisees, you can save them to a user list so you
won't have to search for the individuals each time you want to review
their progress. Faculty/staff users at your institution must be granted
report access by the Liaison in order to view the individual usage reports.
Instructions for granting report access, running reports, and creating
user lists are available on the individual usage reports page. Login
to the CiM Web site and click on the "Individual Usage Report" option
under the "My CiM" menu to access the new reports.
Share Your Career Planning Resources with the Careers in Medicine Knowledge
Base
Careers in Medicine staff are creating a knowledge base to share information
and ideas about what schools are doing in their CiM programs. We envision
the knowledge base as a clearinghouse for workshops, templates, program
outlines, curricula, and other successful career planning resources.
To make this endeavor a reality, we need your help. We are soliciting
contributions to the knowledge base that you are willing to share with
your colleagues. Do you have an outline or description of your CiM program
that might help a school who is just starting to implement the program?
Do you have a workshop or course materials to share or booklets and handouts
that other schools might find useful? Do you have an advising program
that is working well? Share your information, tools, and resources through
the CiM knowledge base.
To submit a resource to the knowledge base, please read and complete
the submission form (Word),
then email the form and an electronic version of your material to careersinmedicine@aamc.org.
If you plan to submit several items, please complete a separate form for
each resource you submit. Only electronic versions of your resources will
be accepted.
Once we begin receiving submissions and see what types of resources we
are getting, we will begin organizing, categorizing, loading them on the
advisor Web site for everyone to peruse. We are planning to eventually
create a Careers in Medicine version of MedEdPORTAL. MedEdPORTAL is an
online publication that offers peer review to help faculty publish and
share educational resources. Because it will be over a year until we have
the resources to build a CiM version, a knowledge base on the advisor
site is the best temporary solution. We do encourage you to submit any
educational resources that you feel may be peer-reviewable to MedEdPORTAL.
You can get more information on publishing your resources on the MedEdPORTAL
site. If you have any questions, please contact Jeanette Calli at
202-862-6270 or careersinmedicine@aamc.org.
