AAMC Policy Guidance on Graduate Medical Education
The quality of graduate medical education (GME), the well-being
of residents, and the safety of patients in AAMC member institutions
have been among the foremost issues addressed by the Association
throughout its history, and yet the challenges of making improvements
in these areas persist. In its latest action on these core issues,
the AAMC undertook a comprehensive look at the current status of
GME and produced a document that provides policy guidance in four
major areas:
- Institutional Oversight and Program Support
- The Educational Program
- Supervision of Residents in Patient Care
- Resident Duty Hours
This policy document was developed by the Association's governing
councils and senior staff, and approved by the Executive Council
in September 2001. The Working Group on Institutional Accountability
for GME also made significant contributions to the guidelines on
institutional oversight and program support.
