Holistic Review
Aligning Admissions to Mission
The purpose of the AAMC Holistic Review Project is to develop tools
and resources that medical schools can adopt or adapt to create
and sustain medical student diversity. The project focuses on the
application and admissions process in the context of medical school
mission and goals and other institutional efforts that promote diversity
(e.g., outreach, recruitment, financial aid, and retention).
Status
Guided by a constituent advisory committee, the project rolled
out its first resource and set of tools with the March 2008 publication
of "Roadmap to Diversity: Key Legal and Educational Foundations
for Medical Schools." This publication:
- identifies key foundations for creating mission-driven, educationally
sound, and legally defensible diversity policies and programs,
and
- contains two tools—an institutional diversity self-assessment
and action plan template.
An organizational performance improvement (OPI) pilot is underway
to help medical schools implement the principles in the current
Roadmap volume. Through the pilot, the AAMC will develop a workshop
and supplementary materials. The medical schools at the University
of Arizona and Drexel University are serving as the pilot sites.
Two new volumes in the Roadmap series are under development: one
on admissions policies and procedures, and the other on enrollment
management considerations.
The project is also developing a comprehensive and centralized
Web resource and training opportunities.
