...in the spotlight

From the University of Maryland School of Medicine: Angela Brodie, Ph.D., has been awarded the Brinker International Award for Breast Cancer Research from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. William T. Carpenter, M.D., is a co-recipient of the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression's Lieber Prize for Outstanding Research in Schizophrenia. Robert C. Gallo, M.D., has been designated an honorary member of the International AIDS Society.

Saul M. Genuth, M.D., professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University, was awarded the Charles H. Best Medal for Distinguished Service in the Cause of Diabetes by the Amercian Diabetes Association.

Scott Whittemore, M.D., the Henry D. Garretson professor and vice chair for research in neurological surgery at the University of Louisville, will head a team of researchers in developing methods to repair or replace damaged spinal cord and central nervous system tissue funded by an $8.5 million National Institutes of Health grant. The grant will launch five research projects at the university's Kentucky Spinal Injury Research Center.

Stephanie Boykin, M.D., instructor in the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Family Medicine, was recently profiled in Female Physician magazine.

Edward A. Ross, M.D., director of the University of Florida College of Medicine's End-Stage Renal Disease Program, was featured in Associated Press and Reuters articles Sept. 19, discussing his research on lead levels in calcium supplements.

From Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center: Robert P. Schwartz, M.D., was featured in articles in the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and U.S. News & World Report, discussing his research on the re-emergence of rickets in infants. Curt D. Furberg, M.D., Ph.D., and Marco Pahor, M.D., were featured in a New York Times article on antihypertensive drugs.

Vanessa Northington Gamble, M.D., Ph.D., vice president for the AAMC Division of Community and Minority Programs, has been re-appointed to the National Advisory Council for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

J. Richard Gaintner, M.D., chair of the AAMC Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems, has announced his retirement as CEO of Shands HealthCare, effective next April.

Dan Jones, M.D., has been appoint- ed associate vice chancellor for health affairs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, effective Jan. 1, 2001.

Jerry Lewis has been named assistant vice president for communications at the University of Miami School of Medicine.

Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, M.D., has been named executive associate dean for research affairs at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

From Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine: Robert Ratcheson, M.D., was elected to a second term as president of the Neuro- logical Society of America. Roland W. Moskowitz, M.D., has been named president-elect of the International Osteoarthritis Research Society. Mark A. Malangoni, M.D., was named president of the Surgical Infection Society.
