all researchers and scientists at the National Institutes
of Health (NIH) from consulting activities for
the next year met with approval from most in academic medicine, but
some observers believe the lasting effects could be detrimental to
the agency.
COGME Report Predicts
Physician Shortage
The Council on Graduate Medical
Education (COGME) predicts that if current trends continue, demand for
physicians will significantly outweigh supply by 2020. It recommends
that medical schools expand the number of graduates by 3,000 per year
by 2015.

to several reports, but rural locations suffer from a scarcity of pediatric
sub-specialists. And the problem is mounting.

The Mayo Clinic joined forces with IBM to create a medical
records database that can retrieve the details of a patient’s medical
condition. The catalog now holds Mayo’s 4.5 million records, and
the plan is to incorporate additional records as they are created.
Minority Focus
Several academic health centers have sharpened their focus
on minority health issues by forming centers that specifically address
minority and health disparities research. Centers in Maryland and Texas
study health issues impacting minorities that are not commonly undertaken
in mainstream health centers.
