Researchers Divided Over NIH Stance on Consulting
A new policy prohibiting all researchers and scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from consulting activities for the next year met with approval from most in academic medicine, but some observers believe the lasting effects could be detrimental to the agency.

COGME Report Predicts Physician Shortage
The Council on Graduate Medical Education (COGME) predicts that if current trends continue, demand for physicians will significantly outweigh supply by 2020. It recommends that medical schools expand the number of graduates by 3,000 per year by 2015.

Rural Medicine Programs Aim to Reverse Physician Shortage in Outlying Regions
Many rural medical practices across the country have been grappling with a shortage of doctors for quite some time, and rural medicine programs have provided a much-needed boost to these regions.

Pediatricians Becoming Scarce in Select Areas

Patient Library
The Mayo Clinic joined forces with IBM to create a medical records database that can retrieve the details of a patient’s medical condition. The catalog now holds Mayo’s 4.5 million records, and the plan is to incorporate additional records as they are created.

Minority Focus
Several academic health centers have sharpened their focus on minority health issues by forming centers that specifically address minority and health disparities research. Centers in Maryland and Texas study health issues impacting minorities that are not commonly undertaken in mainstream health centers.
