Every year, more than 50,000 medical students and residents
rotate through the nation's 173 Veterans Affairs (VA) medical
centers. More than half the nation's physicians have received
some part of their medical training in VA hospitals. That
may change, at least in Chicago.

Patient Advocates Put a Human Face on Stem Cell Research

Faced with the possibility of a prohibition
on spending federal dollars on embryonic stem cell research,
the scientific community and patient advocacy groups came
together to mobilize a massive effort to educate policy-makers,
the public, and the media about the therapeutic potential
of this promising new frontier in medicine.
A new AAMC policy statement strives to address
public concerns about the hours residents work and ensure
that graduate medical education is of the highest quality.
