"Portraits of Medical Education"
Brian Fonseca, a pediatric resident at the University of California, San Diego, participates in a hu plig or "soul calling" with a shaman during a cultural immersion day. The event is designed to expose pediatric residents to health traditions in the Hmong community. The Hmong believe that most illnesses are the result of loss of soul. Photographer: Vivian Reznik, M.D., MPH, Professor of Pediatrics, UCSD This is one of the runners-up in the 2003-2004 AAMC Reporter photography contest. |
