"Portraits of Medical Education"

Photo by Vivian Reznik, M.D., MPH

Brian Fonseca, a pediatric resident at the University of California, San Diego, participates in a hu plig or "soul calling" with a shaman during a cultural immersion day. The event is designed to expose pediatric residents to health traditions in the Hmong community. The Hmong believe that most illnesses are the result of loss of soul.
