The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) awarded funding to nine projects studying strategies for eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities, including:

Racial and Ethnic Variation in Medical Interactions, Baylor College of Medicine: Researchers will assess the extent to which problems in doctor-patient communication contribute to racial and ethnic disparities in health care use.

Overcoming Racial Health Disparities, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine: The school will establish a center of excellence on racial health disparities in African-American adults, particularly in rural settings.

Improving the Delivery of Effective Care to Minorities, Mount Sinai School of Medicine: This research project aims to measure the underuse of selected medical and surgical interventions in Harlem.

Understanding and Reducing Native Elder Health Disparities, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center: Researchers will examine the quality of care for diabetes, the delivery of clinical preventive services, cancer screening, and smoking cessation among elderly American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Access and Quality of Care for Vulnerable Black Populations, Morehouse School of Medicine: These studies will explore ways to improve health care access and quality for vulnerable African Americans, particularly adults who are chronically ill and low-income children.

Health Disparities in Minority Adult Americans, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine: The project will address differences in health status and use of health services between white and minority elderly populations.

UCLA/Drew/RAND Program to Address Disparities in Health, University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine: Researchers will establish a multidisciplinary program to enhance understanding of the factors that influence health care use and behavior.

Understanding and Eliminating Health Disparities in Blacks, Medical University of South Carolina: To identify solutions to disparities in health status between African Americans and whites in South Carolina, the project will focus on interventions related to providers and provider-patient interactions.

Promoting Effective Communication and Decision-Making for Diverse Populations, University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine: Researchers will assess the promotion of effective communication and decision-making, and whether these skills influence racial and ethnic health disparities.
