Medicine and the Arts:

Sometimes what medical students do with their time outside of class and the hospital gives them more humanity. For Julie Roth, a third-year medical student and best friend of the photographer, her gift for and love of music as she plays the upright bass reveal the origin of her compassion.

This is one of the Runners-Up in the 2002-2003 AAMC Reporter photography contest, which had the theme "A Day in the Life of a Medical Student."
