"Portraits of Medical Education"

Cultural Competency: Learning how to provide culturally appropriate patient education enables medical students to become more effective clinicians. At the Mission Neighborhood Clinic in San Francisco, an educator models these skills as she teaches a family about the effects of asthma on the airways.

Photographer: Rachel Agrin, fourth-year medical student at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine

This is one of the runners-up in the 2003-2004 AAMC Reporter photography contest.
