AAMC Reporter: December 2005
Penn State's Kirch Named Next President of AAMCThe AAMC's next president will be Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., senior vice president for health affairs at The Pennsylvania State University, dean of Penn State College of Medicine, and chief executive officer of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He will assume his new duties July 1. Currently the AAMC's chair-elect and co-chair of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Kirch has overseen Penn State's medical college and center since 2000. He and his leadership team have been widely credited with revitalizing the institution and guiding it through a major expansion. Kirch will succeed Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., who has led the AAMC since 1994. Cohen called Kirch "uniquely qualified" to lead the association, and said he "brings the integrated perspective and experience, outstanding leadership abilities, and collaborative spirit that are essential for success in the challenging times ahead." Kirch said: "The next few years promise to be a transformative time for medical education and research, the practice of medicine, and our nation's health care system. I look forward to working with all the AAMC constituents to shape our future course. Great opportunities lie ahead." Richard D. Krugman, M.D., dean of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, will replace Kirch as the AAMC's chair-elect. |
