"A Day in the Life of a Medical Student"

"Operation Smile": Tulane medical student Michael Friel examines an 18-month-old boy immediately following the child's bilateral cleft lip repair. Friel was on of 42 volunteers participating in the "Operation Smile" mission to Lanzhou, China, in June 2002.

This is one of the Runners-Up in the 2002-2003 AAMC Reporter photography contest, which had the theme "A Day in the Life of a Medical Student."
