Dr. Ruth L. KirschsteinWashington, D.C., October 7, 2009—AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., issued the following statement today on the passing of Ruth L. Kirschstein, M.D.:

"Dr. Ruth Kirschstein's death is a tremendous loss to patients, researchers, and all Americans who value medical research and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The first woman to ever head an NIH institute, Dr. Kirschstein devoted her life to advancing medical progress, promoting diversity and scientific excellence, training future generations of scientists, and serving as a mentor to scores of researchers and scientific administrators.

From her work on the Sabin vaccine to her many leadership positions at the NIH, she maintained a singular focus on scientific excellence, while demonstrating a steadfast devotion to public service. Dr. Kirschstein leaves a legacy that will continue to enrich the scientific enterprise and the health of the American people for generations to come.

On behalf of the leaders and faculty of the nation's medical schools and teaching hospitals, I extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Kirschstein's devoted husband, Dr. Al Rabson; their son, Dr. Arnold Rabson; and other family members."
