Bernard K. Jarvis, C.P.A.

Washington, D.C., September 8, 2009—The AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) announced today that Bernard K. Jarvis, C.P.A., has been selected as the association's new chief financial officer. Mr. Jarvis, currently a vice president for finance and administration at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, will join the association on Sept. 21.

"Bernard Jarvis brings an impressive array of experience with local government, university administration, nonprofit firms, and private banking to his new role," said AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D. "His expertise in these areas will be invaluable to the AAMC and its members, as we face difficult economic times, as well as great potential opportunities."

"I am both delighted and honored to join such a respected organization as the AAMC in this significant leadership role," said Mr. Jarvis. "I look forward to getting to work, and contributing to the success of the association and its important mission."

As chief financial officer, Mr. Jarvis will oversee finance, accounting, and business services for the AAMC. He replaces Barbara Friedman, who stepped down from the position in March of this year.

Since 2007, Mr. Jarvis has been responsible for all fiscal and administrative operations at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, including accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, information systems, and investment management at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. During his time at the center, he developed the financial and operational analysis for the organization's strategic plan, improved internal financial reporting, and overhauled human resources policies and procedures. Prior to 2007, Mr. Jarvis held positions with U.S. Trust Company, NA, The Summit Charitable Foundation, Howard University, the District of Columbia's Department of Human Services, and Ernst & Young.

He earned his M.B.A. from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in 1975 and his B.A. from Morehouse College in 1974. A certified public accountant, Mr. Jarvis served for seven years on the board of directors of both Unity HealthCare, Inc., and Friends of the National Zoo.
