Washington, D.C., August 4, 2009AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., issued the following statement today on the Obama administration's reversal of a policy that would have eliminated Medicare's capital indirect medical education (IME) adjustment paid to U.S. teaching hospitals: "We wholeheartedly commend the Obama administration for restoring Medicare's capital IME adjustment. This critical federal supportan estimated $380 million in the coming year and more than $5 billion over the next decadewill ensure that teaching hospitals can continue to train future doctors; care for very ill and uninsured patients; maintain vital standby services, such as emergency and trauma care; and provide highly specialized services to communities across the country. As we move closer to meaningful reform of our health care system, it is crucial that the essential physician training programs and unique patient care services provided by U.S. teaching hospitals are sustained and supported. By reversing the cuts and preventing what would have been a devastating blow to teaching hospitals and the communities they serve, the Obama administration has clearly recognized the important role these institutions play in assuring access to health care, while maintaining environments in which clinical care, discovery, and the training of the next generation of health professionals can occur." # # # The Association of American Medical Colleges is a not-for-profit association representing all 131 accredited U.S. and 17 accredited Canadian medical schools; nearly 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems, including 68 Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers; and nearly 90 academic and scientific societies. Through these institutions and organizations, the AAMC represents 128,000 faculty members, 75,000 medical students, and 110,000 resident physicians. Additional information about the AAMC and U.S. medical schools and teaching hospitals is available at www.aamc.org/newsroom. |
