Washington, D.C., May 9, 2002 - Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) President Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., issued the following statement in response to the antitrust lawsuit filed this week by three physicians against the National Resident Matching Program, its sponsoring organizations, and a number of hospitals: "As one of the founding sponsors of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), the Association of American Medical Colleges knows that this program provides a valuable public service that helps maintain the high quality of physician training in the United States. By ensuring a smooth transition from medical school to residency, the NRMP is an important link in the continuum of medical education. The Match is an orderly system that helps both students and health care institutions find the best fit between professional aspirations and educational opportunities, respectively. The AAMC believes the NRMP, as well as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), are crucial components of America's medical education system, which is acknowledged to be the best in the world. We intend to challenge this lawsuit with the utmost vigor." # # # The Association of American Medical Colleges represents the 125 accredited U.S. medical schools; the 16 accredited Canadian medical schools; some 400 major teaching hospitals, including Veterans Administration medical centers; more than 105,000 faculty in 98 academic and scientific societies; and the nation's 66,000 medical students and 97,000 residents. # # # The Association of American Medical Colleges is a not-for-profit association representing all 129 accredited U.S. and 17 accredited Canadian medical schools; nearly 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems, including 68 Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers; and 94 academic and scientific societies.
