For Immediate Release

On March 10, 2002, AAMC President Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., issued the following statement on the life and contributions of John M. Eisenberg, M.D., M.B.A, director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ):

"America lost a towering presence today with the death of John Eisenberg, Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. At the age of 55, Eisenberg had already established a reputation as one of the most gifted and effective leaders of American medicine and as one of the country's most respected champions of high quality, evidenced-based, cost-effective, and accessible health care. His death creates an enormous void, but his life provides an even greater inspiration for the innumerable friends and colleagues who were privileged to know him."

For more information on the life and work of Dr. Eisenberg, as well as a statement by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, visit the AHRQ Web site.
