NRMP To Include Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Specialty Match

Washington, D.C., October 10, 2000 -- The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology announce the establishment of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Match. The first Match will be for residency training beginning July 1, 2002. Registration with the NRMP for the new fellowship Match will begin in November 2000 and continue through April 25, 2001. Applicants will learn whether they matched into the program on May 23, 2001.

"The NRMP is pleased to welcome pediatric hematology/oncology as a participant in the fellowship Match program," said NRMP Executive Director Robert L. Beran, Ph.D. "The program directors and the applicants in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Match will enjoy all of the advantages of the NRMP Main Match for residencies."

In addition to conducting the general Match in the spring of each year, the NRMP provides matching services for many fellowships throughout the year. The NRMP matches over 3,000 residents annually in 21 fellowships. The subspecialties include:

"We are confident that the use of the Match will allow more residents to develop an interest in our subspecialty pediatric hematology/oncology. Applicants will be able to consider a wider range of programs," said Dr. Meyers, Program Director, Department of Pediatrics, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. "The use of common dates for all of the programs will remove a significant stress from the application process. We are looking forward to the Match with confidence that both the applicants and the programs will benefit."

Individuals interested in entering the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Match, should call the NRMP office at 202-828-0676 (program directors) or 202-862-6077 (applicants) or contact Dr. Paul A. Meyers at 212-639-5952.

The National Resident Matching Program was established in 1952 to provide a mechanism that would end the chaotic state of applicants and programs being forced to make commitments before all options could be considered. In addition, the program provides a common time for the announcement of the appointments, as well as an agreement for programs and applicants to honor the commitment to offer and accept an appointment if a match results.
